Anopheles gambiae – Female, 2026.
Fineliner and Indian ink on paper, 30 x 39 cm.

This illustration depicts the female Anopheles gambiae mosquito. It was created using a stippling technique similar to the one I used to depict the life cycle of Drosophila melanogaster, combining dots and fine lines. This slender mosquito has long legs and narrow wings marked with characteristic dark and pale spots. Unlike the male, the female has short, less feathery antennae and elongated mouthparts adapted for blood-feeding. She requires a blood meal to develop her eggs and is a major vector of malaria in Africa.
